jwfacts,
Wonderful article. Never a JW, Thank you so much for your site I learned so much about the JWS from your website.
i have thought about writing this article for many years, and the awake!
2014 no.4 was the final straw.
there it states that jehovah's witnesses show no prejudice towards homosexuals, and "they neither mock nor mistreat people whose practices differ from their own.

even though i now consider myself an atheist and have little time for religion as such , i have to acknowledge that some religious institutions , and even some i would consider a cult more so than others , do a fantastic job in the field of charitable works.. for so many in our communities who are disadvantaged ,in one way or another , the down and outs , for a better phrase , those that have succumbed to alcoholism , drug dependency , mental illness in it`s many forms , homeless people , juveniles suffering abuse of one sort or another at home , domestic violence , etc.
etc.
the list just goes on and on .. yet their are religious charitable institutions who are at the forefront of helping these people offering and lending a hand both physically , emotionally , and even financially to support these people without judging them .. so even though i consider myself an atheist i can commend what these religious institutions do to for these people... i can`t say the same thing for jehovah`s witnesses who will take , take , take and give nothing in return.. smiddy.

LV101,
Healthcare in the US really needs some serious work unless you can afford one of the better policies but still the deductibles can be killers. I have always had great insurance but managed 5 times to hit what is classified as catastrophic losses according to the insurance company where my out of pocket expenses reached $5,000 for the year. I just wonder how the average family can afford such an expense.
The elderly is another ballgame and I am in that one with my mother. I attempted to care for her. Well that just did not work out. Long story short, the County Sheriff and Social Services had a long talk with me and said for my safety she needed to be placed in a locked down unit at a nursing facility NOW. Apparently they had my house on watch status for my safety LOL. Well we had to pay $6,000 a month for 4 years till we drained her bank account down to $2,000 before Medicare would start paying one red cent. All this time they could play with drugs to keep her from beating the crap out of people. See when I took her to the doctor or ER most of the time she was such a sweet old lady except the time she knocked out the EMT driver and the time she came after me in front of the Sheriff with a butcher knife. Such a nice old lady. BTW, she is still alive and still trying to beat up the other patients and staff at 89. And she has managed to escape 4 times this past year thus why she has an ankle monitor. She can only make it to the parking lot.
leaving the religion can be likened to a game of poker.
many possible scenarios can be played out during the game and the potential loss or gains are many:.
you have put too many chips in, every round it just seems you will win it all in the end.
Great OP, never a JW but all of life is a poker game. I myself I would say I have been a high stakes player but I fight the fights that most other people just walk away from. I will do the research find the loopholes, laws or whatever it takes to get what it takes to make it happen and win at the game.
Talesin, is correct life is a gamble and it is how you play the game. I was forced to short sale my last home which was devalued during the recession by an unbelievable amount. Same as a lot of folks. Both the bank and I lost a huge amount of money. Well everyone banks, realtors, finance people, creditors all told me lady you cannot buy anything for three years that is it!! Not this Rebel or Fighter she will find a loophole. Three years equals 1 year 4 months and 10 days and it only took that long because I was having trouble finding the right house then the As Is Seller was doing $7,000 worth of requested repair work. My realtor looked at me after closing and said As Is do not do repair work you know that. I said but they did because we you and I asked them too. He said maybe I should try this again in all my years I have never seen that happen.

Snakes,
Yes their facilities are all about making the kids comfortable and happy. Take the time one day and walk through the hospital.
LV101 and Smiddy,
Actually I am not a Shriner, LOL I have the wrong plumbing, I am a Ladies of the Oriental Shrine (LOS) but we work just as hard as the men. They build the facilities etc. We have our funny hats (Fez) too. We raise money so that the family of the children have travel money (hotels, meals etc). The ladies (LOS) will spend time with Mom, dad and siblings while the children are being cared for so Mom and Dad can focus on their sick child anything to make the experience less painful.
I am extremely pleased with all the work we do through the Shriner's, Ladies of the Oriental Shrine and all of the other Masonic Organizations.
In order to be a Shriner you first need to be a Mason. Then you apply to become a Shriner.
In my case I had to have a Mason in my family which was my Uncle. I was associated with the Shriner organization since I was a little child. My uncle allowed us to play with his car. The first organization that I actually joined was Job's Daughters which at that time was 12 now the girls can join at 10. Their philanthropic charity is Hearing Impaired Kid's Endowment which raising money for children from birth to the age of 20. Anyone can apply for this money for their child, with application from their doctor, no race, religious questions asked just need basis. These young ladies are taught how to run meetings, fund raisers, social events, fun activities and the adults are there for advise only. I am still involved with this organization as an Certified Adult Volunteer.
There are two other youth groups they are Rainbows which is open to girls I believe they start also at the age of 10. DeMolay is for boys. Each of these groups have their own philanthropic charities.
Besides the Shriner's there are many other Masonic groups and each of these have some great philanthropic endeavors. A lot of them center around children.
Women have many groups to belong but each has a very important role. Charities include diabetes, homeless/abuse shelters, and the list goes on.
talesin,
Yes, all of these groups have a very vital role in the community and serve the community very well. I would highly recommend anyone exiting the Witnesses to get involved in anyone of these organizations. It would give them true charity work plus new true/real friendships. These are all real tax exempt organization.
Heaven,
a picture speaks a thousand words, how true a statement.
i'd like to relate an experience i had yesterday with a couple of jw's "working" with a cart yesterday.. been coming to this site for many years and these days i don't feel i've got much to contribute ,but i was out yesterday doing some voluntary work for a friend who has gone on an overseas trip .travelling around my local seaside area doing the job at hand ,i came across a couple of jw's sitting in a shelter overlooking the beach and had their trolley propped against a large public rubbish bin ,it was actually hard to see ithe trolley from most angles - whatever happened to lifting the basket to show the light stuff ...oh well .the large carpark was pretty empty except for us ,we've had pretty wet weather here lately ,bad storms and here they were set up for a days witnessing rugged up with wind and spitting rain ,i sort of thought " well that's dedication " ....that was my first thought then i pulled myself together and then thought "if i wanted to get some time in and not have to work at it too hard this maybe the place to go if i was a jw still".. well i finished my pickup and looked over at the two and realised i'd read other's experiences about approaching the cart people and wondered if talking to them would be of any benefit as i had witnessed this area for many years and my stance against the wts for hiding molestation of children is well known ,i thought, and they avoid me like the plague.. they were'nt familiar to me so i went up to them and introduced myself and quickly let them know who i was and what i am doing now as regards jw's.
they were a married couple middle aged been in for a long time and could relate to changes in the org very well to pre 1975 when i had first contact.
they pretty much suggested i was blinded to the truth ,when challenged on the royal commission into sex abuse they pointed to a case where they believed a victim they supposedly knew of in the jws was a liar ,so that's their case for the org -unbelievable.

WingCommander,
I asked the "Elder" many a times what charity work does the JW perform especially when he went on one of his the way I read the Bible the Masonic organizations are Babylonian blah blah rants. I heard that rant so many times, I made a point to join another one while we were dating.
